Jaya Ibrahim |
It was also in London, in the early 1980s, that John met Jaya Ibrahim. This meeting led to their first joint project, in which they successfully renovated a dilapidated Victorian flat. They continued working together on various private commissions including the renovation of 12th century monastery near Lucca in Italy. John Saunders came to Indonesia in the early 1990s and worked together with jaya Ibrahim on various sepcialized projects. It was here that the partnership blossomed into the design and development of high-quality, original furniture, which has become the defining mark of Solohome. His years at Kingston School of Arts were the driving force behind his ideas and his drive for perfection; his insight and the years spent in London, where he was exposed to the best of European art and design, coupled with his experience in Indonesia, made John one of the best contemporary interpreters of Indonesian traditional art and crafts in particular, Asian art in general.
