Jaya Ibrahim started his career in London under the tutelage of Anouska Hempel. Nearly a decade later he returned to his javanese roots, settling in his native Jakarta. "My first impulse has always been to seek beauty and serenity," he says, "and I never adhere to one style or period. Rather, it's what I can do with that style or period in conjunction with other elements that creates a special mix." It is precisely this ability to combine a European formality (often looking to Sir Edwin Lutyens and Andrea Palladio for inspiration)with the richness of Indonesian culture that has made Ibrahim a top choice for such international clients as Aman resorts and Rosewood Hotels and Resorts, among other. "For the Legian Bali hotel, we interpreted Balinese traditions in a contemporary way, expressing our version of a minimalist style," he notes. "In the end, I try to create spaces that incorporate a 'lost world' idea of both the East and the West."
